Abstract

The most popular and effective technique for ultrasonic velocity measurements is the pulse technique. In the present work, a computer based single-pulse sender/receiver technique is designed in the laboratory using indigenous components and a PCL-812 ADC card. A program written in C controls the pulse generation, detection and travel time measurement. An r.f. burst of 2 MHz of 5μS width is obtained from the ADC card. This pulse is amplified and sent to the transmitting transducer. The received pulse is detected and processed by the ADC card for determining the travel time and displays the ultrasonic velocity of propagation in the system on the computer screen. The system developed in the laboratory has been tested for the ultrasonic velocity measurements in different standard liquids. It has been found that the ultrasonic velocity measurements carried out using the above system matches well with those reported in the literature.

Abstract

Pulse echo technique is widely used in ultrasonics to characterize the material under study, as it requires a single transducer for transmitter and receiver. In the present work, we have developed software to use pulser receiver card, DUSC880 from KEIYU NDT CO. TAIWAN in flaw locator. The card generates narrow train of pulses that are fed to the piezoelectric transducer which generates ultrasonic pulses that propagate through the material under test. Echoes from the back wall and the flaw (if any) are detected by the same transducer. The control panel for data acquisition, process and display is developed in VC++. Designed software displays flaw along with its position (depth) from the surface with the resolution of ±0.2 mm. The measurements are calibrated using standard calibration block. The software is successfully tested to detect position of the flaw in the various materials under test thereby enlarging the domain of application of pulser receiver card.

Abstract

Impedance spectroscopy is the study of measurement of impedance and phase with respect to frequency of electrical components or material under study. In the present work, an electrical impedance analysis of air-borne ultrasonic transducers is carried out with the help of a dedicated impedance analyzer, AD5933, manufactured by analog devices. It is a sweep type of resonant frequency tracking instrument that helps to detect the exact resonant frequency for ST 40 and SR 40 transmitter and receiver air borne transducers, respective. It is observed that impedance analyser, AD5933 is effective in the resonant tracking of air borne ultrasonic transducer.
